They Did What?!

The bathroom was the only "affected" room from a water valve leak.  The service provider who initially responded to the loss had cut all of the walls throughout the building up to 4 feet high... and the bathroom was still wet.  The windows were cracked open, effectively rendering the drying equipment useless.  After 5 days of this drying attempt, the affected area (bathroom) was still wet...

Unfortunately, this cut and gut philosophy is still prevalent with some service providers. This is especially true among general contractors, who subcontract the cleaning and mitigation services, or worse, don’t understand the complications associated with water and smoke damage but adopt a philosophy of "we can do it ourselves, no worries, we are great carpenters". Every water loss does not need to be converted to a reconstruction/remodel project.  Regrettably, many of the "me too" mitigation service providers ride in the wake of national branding by paying their franchise fees, continuing their practice of doing just enough to get by. Even worse are the carpet cleaning companies who extract the water and run – they are carpet cleaners, not mitigation and drying contractors. A reputable and conscientious contractor strives to exceed customer expectations through world-class service and by applying advanced mitigation protocols aimed at limiting damages and charges.

When your insured doesn’t know what to do, they will often look to you for guidance. Whether you refer a service provider or not, your insured will judge you based on the experience they have on their loss. Their experience may even affect their decision of whether to renew their policy with you or not. Even if you don’t refer the service provider, a bad experience or a GOOD EXPERIENCE CAN HAVE A DRAMATIC IMPACT ON YOUR BUSINESS. We all know that in a down economy, client retention is critical.

Here are some other scenario’s that really happen because of mediocrity in the delivery of restoration services:

Disinfectants are sprayed on every job because "we always do it". What if the client has allergic multiple chemical sensitivity?  Isn’t that a question that should be asked to ensure the homeowners safety? Often the loss resulted from fresh water and cleaning with hot water and soap is the more appropriate solution.  Could profit be the driving force "to always do it"?

There is an extra large dehumidifier placed in every room, and so many air movers you cannot even walk through the facility.  Worse yet, many of the pieces of equipment aren’t even running! This mistake is egregious on a number of levels. Often times, more is less. It is a fact that drying is not accelerated by loading up equipment just for the sake of thinking that more is better. Perhaps the mitigation contractor is selfishly trying to make more money... Did you know there are industry standard formulas to qualify the correct amount of equipment required to dry structure and contents?

Qualifications:  Not all IICRC qualified firms are equal... some IICRC certified firms are only such because the owner is certified. Did you know that the firms who display this distinctive level of certification are required to have technicians who are certified in the very specific mitigation service disciplines (water, fire and smoke, odor, mold, etc,) they are providing – on site overseeing and performing the mitigation. Unfortunately, some "me too" service providers often do not have certified personnel on your insured’s loss. They subcontract services to non-certified firms, or use part time labor, temporary labor and employ other "cost and wage suppression" strategies to leverage profits, while failing to live up to their commitments to the industry. The bathroom previously mentioned is a perfect example of this.
