Flooding Must be Handled Quickly, by Experts

SANDUSKY, OH - With heavy rains in the area, it is important for home and business owners to consider proper and adequate insurance coverage to protect against a sump pump failure, or a back up of sewer or drain. Both septic systems and municipal sanitary sewer systems can back up causing significant damage, as recently occurred in the Sandusky community.

"Sump pumps tend to fail just at the critical time they are needed. Under heavy use, circuit breakers often fail, or power outages occur leading to flooding of basements and crawl spaces. It is never too soon to review your insurance coverage with your agent. It is a hard lesson to learn otherwise," according to Jon Fields, president of Steam Pro.

When any water damage occurs to a home or business, be sure to first contact your insurance agent right away to submit a claim. When cleaning up after a sewage back-up, it is not uncommon that the damage will exceed the policy limits, often set at $5,000 or $10,000 in many policies, according to Fields.

Be sure to address the water problem immediately. Waiting for the water to recede will likely be more costly in the long run.

And finally, always call in a professional to assess and clean the area, especially when dealing with sewage back ups. Professional water loss specialists have equipment designed to effectively extract water, control temperature, humidity and air movement, and measure and monitor the results of the clean up.

Fields says that excessive moisture left in a building for too long can result in secondary damage to personal contents, such as furniture, wall hangings and pictures, and damage the building's structure and cause microbial contamination of the environment. Too often, homeowners attempt the clean-up themselves and the end result is musty smells, mold contamination, and permanently damaged contents and structure!
